A Partnership in the Making: A W/R/B Underwriting Secondment

In our two-part series, we take the time to talk with Claims Management Practice Lead, Daniel Cambage, to find out more about our legal secondment programme.

A Partnership in the Making: A W/R/B Underwriting Secondment

Here at W/R/B Underwriting, our customers’ best interests are always at the forefront. We consistently endeavour to provide an efficient, accurate, and fair response for our clients. We constantly strive to ensure that our team’s knowledge and expertise are of the highest standard.

To support this, the team works with external partners and clients to better their practices, knowledge, and expertise – one example of this is our legal secondment programme in the Claims Team.

A Mutually Beneficial Partnership

Bringing these individuals into our business allows us to enhance the team’s technical legal skills, gain a wider understanding of our clients and build a deeper, more meaningful relationship with the legal provider. It also means that those on secondment learn more about our practices and how we best service our customers, coverholders, brokers, and intermediaries.

In our two-part series, we take the time to talk with Claims Management Practice Lead, Daniel Cambage, who has co-ordinated the legal secondment programme this year.

Claims Management Practice Lead

What does the W/R/B Underwriting secondment entail and who can join the programme?

Daniel: As part of our mission to provide an exceptional claims service from an expert team of underwriting and claims professionals, we’re looking to onboard legal partners to help support our decision-making. Therefore, the 6-month programme is open to preferred legal firms, and secondees must have at least 3 years’ post qualification experience.

But that doesn’t mean just anyone can come on board. As much as we would like to provide an insight into the market to as many people as possible, myself and Chief Claims Officer, Andrew Mitchell, will firstly meet with the proposed secondees before giving final sign off on their placement. After all, we need to be sure that we have individuals with both the technical expertise and the personality to fit into the existing dynamic of our claims team.

What would you say are the key benefits for those who take part from the legal partners?

Daniel: Although I can’t directly speak for our secondees, I believe that they are able to gain a deeper insight into clients’ needs and requirements, having seen it from the front line, as well as how W/R/B Underwriting operates. They are also able to gain a wider context as to how a panel’s work impacts an insurance company and can become a more rounded insurance lawyer.

How about the workload? Are they thrown in at the deep end so to speak?

Daniel: It’s not just about taking a few cases here and there– we fully submerge the secondees into the W/R/B Underwriting work life. They have the opportunity to interact with our underwriting and actuarial teams, meanwhile our claims team gains some invaluable legal experience which greatly strengthens our claims proposition and service.

But that’s not to say we leave them completely to their own devices, at least not until they feel comfortable – the W/R/B Underwriting Claims team is a collaborative, supportive unit, allowing secondees the opportunity to learn and develop during their time with us. Above all, they are treated as if they are a permanent member of the team, and we think this greatly important during the on-boarding process.

Given the current circumstances as a result of COVID-19, have you seen any impact on your secondment placements, or has it very much been business as usual?

Daniel: We’re delighted to have seen the programme continue during lockdown. After all, it is important that W/R/B Underwriting operates as close to ‘business as usual’ as possible. We have been able to work efficiently during the lockdown period and have provided the secondees the necessary software and hardware to achieve this. The only change is that our current secondees will be with us for a little longer than usual, to allow them to return to the office before going back to their previous roles.

Would you consider the programme to be successful?

Daniel: Yes, it certainly is. Although we already have qualified solicitors in the current claims team, the secondee programme has enhanced our legal knowledge. This allows us to provide our insureds, brokers and other stakeholders, with a greater level of service. Furthermore, it has enabled us to build great relationships with the legal firm from which the secondee has joined us, which is very important as it enables us to shape a bespoke legal service to best suit the needs of W/R/B Underwriting and our clients.

But who are the secondees taking part? Keep your eyes peeled for the next instalment of the series, where we talk to two current secondees about their experience with the W/R/B Underwriting Claims team.

If you have any questions on the programme, feel free to get in touch with Daniel.
